Tharangambadi, also called as Trancobar is a small seaside town in East coast and situated in between Sirkazhi and Karaikal. It is around 15 kilometres from Karaikal.
This town is once upon a time a significant city for Portuguese government (till British took it over from them ). There is also a small Portugese fort which is converted to a Museum by the seaside.
Tharangambadi beach is very lively with a magnificent port by the sea and the shoreline dotted by rocks. Sea is very lively with ferocious waves hitting and gives a great experience. There is also a board warning people not to take bath and play in beach as it is very risky.
Apart from fort, there is also a small but a beautiful temple by the sea.
There are quite a few food outlets selling snacks in the beach. There are couple of resorts by the sea which you can use of you are planning for a over night stay by the beach(worth it).
An evening trip to the beach along with the museum engagement will take 3-4 hours . So ideal for a good sunday afternoon trip. Note that museum will close by 5.45 PM.
I visited the place along with my family(My wife, and my daughter Deeksha) my cousin’s(Seenu with his wife Nandini , children Sai Santhosh ,Janani along with her son Mukundan and daughter Madhubala and their children yesterday. We gave the museum a miss. I have seen it earlier. Since it was very crowded and covid is still active, we didn’t want to take a risk.
Below are few pictures.
